If you’ve spent any time in the WordPress dashboard, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the little “Screen Options” tab in the top right corner and completely ignored it. Most people do. It kind of just sits there looking unimportant.

But once you click it, you realize it’s actually one of the easiest ways to make WordPress way less annoying to use.

What Screen Options Actually Do

Screen Options let you control what shows up on the page you’re currently working on. It’s not some big complicated setting. It’s literally just a way to show or hide different elements so your workspace fits how you like to work.

For example, if you’re on the Posts page, clicking Screen Options will show checkboxes for things like:

  • Author
  • Categories
  • Tags
  • Comments
  • Date

You can turn any of these on or off depending on what you care about. If you never look at tags, you can hide that column and clean things up instantly.

It Changes Based on Where You Are

One thing that confuses people is that Screen Options aren’t the same everywhere. They change depending on the page you’re on.

If you’re editing a post, you might see options for:

  • Featured image
  • Excerpt
  • Discussion (comments settings)
  • Custom fields

If you’re in the Media Library, you’ll get totally different options. Same idea, just tailored to what you’re doing.

So if you don’t see something you expect, it’s probably because you’re on a different screen.

It Helps You Get Rid of Clutter

WordPress can feel really cluttered, especially if you have a lot of plugins installed. You’ll start seeing extra boxes and settings everywhere, and it gets overwhelming fast.

Screen Options let you clean that up.

If there are sections you never use, just hide them. Your editor becomes way simpler, and it’s easier to focus on what actually matters. This is especially helpful if you’re someone who gets distracted easily or just wants a cleaner workspace.

You Can Control How Much You See

On some pages, Screen Options also let you control how many items show at once.

For example, on your Posts page, you can change how many posts appear per page. If you’re editing a lot of content at once, increasing that number can save you from clicking through a bunch of pages.

It’s a small thing, but it makes managing content a lot faster.

Why It’s Worth Using

Screen Options aren’t flashy, but they make a real difference in how WordPress feels to use. Instead of working around a layout that doesn’t fit you, you can adjust it in a few seconds.

Most people never touch it, which is why WordPress can feel more complicated than it actually is. Once you start using it, everything feels a little more straightforward.

If you’re in your dashboard right now, click that tab and see what’s there. You’ll probably find at least a few things you didn’t realize you could control.
