It happens to everyone. Whether you’ve forgotten your password or just want to update it for security reasons, resetting your WordPress password is quick and easy. There are two ways to do it depending on whether you’re locked out of your account or already logged in. Here’s how both work.

Method 1: Reset Your Password from the Login Screen

Use this method if you’ve forgotten your password and can’t log in.

Step 1: Go to your WordPress login page

Open your browser and go to your website’s login page by adding /wp-admin to the end of your URL. For example: yourwebsite.com/wp-admin

Step 2: Click “Lost Your Password?”

On the login screen, you’ll see a link that says Lost your password? just below the login fields. Click it.

Step 3: Enter your username or email

You’ll be taken to a password recovery page. Type in either the username or the email address associated with your WordPress account, then click Get New Password.

Step 4: Check your email

WordPress will send a password reset link to your email. Open that email, click the link inside, and you’ll be taken to a page where you can set a new password. Type it in and click Reset Password. Done!

Method 2: Change Your Password from Inside the Dashboard

Use this method if you’re already logged in and want to update your password.

Step 1: Go to your profile

In the top right corner of your WordPress dashboard, you’ll see your name and profile picture. Hover over your name and a small dropdown will appear. Click Edit My Profile.

Step 2: Scroll to Account Management

Once you’re on the profile page, scroll all the way down until you see the Account Management section near the bottom of the page.

Step 3: Generate a new password

Click the Generate Password button. WordPress will automatically create a strong password for you. You can keep the suggested password or replace it by typing your own directly into the field. WordPress will show you a strength indicator letting you know if your password is weak, medium, or strong. Always aim for strong.

Step 4: Save your changes

Once you’ve set your new password, click the Update Profile button at the bottom of the page. Your password will be updated right away and you’ll use it the next time you log in.

Tips for Keeping Your WordPress Account Secure

  • Use a strong, unique password that’s at least 12 characters long and includes a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Don’t reuse passwords from other accounts.
  • Consider using a password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden to keep track of your credentials securely.
  • If you’re an administrator, regularly review your user list and make sure no old accounts have access they no longer need.
